#3 The Country Club Plaza
The Plaza holds a special place in my heart because it’s the first neighborhood I lived in when I first moved out to KC. It’s also where I met the AK.
It was established in 1923 by JC Nichols as “the first shopping center in the world to accommodate shoppers arriving by automobile.” The architecture was modeled after Seville Spain, featuring clay tile roofs, colorful mosaics and fountains in abundance.
Now the Plaza is home to upscale boutiques, local and chain restaurants, and Halls, an original department store owned by the family who founded Hallmark. It’s one place in Kansas City where you’re always guaranteed a crowd, especially on those lazy weekend afternoons. Once when I was at the Plaza with the sisterbears and Katie P, a group of 8 junior high girls taught us how to Crank That.
