#16 Ice Skating at Crown Center
The skating rink is open for the season. I’ve never been… maybe this year we can all go get win’try together?
Kansas-city based Capybara recently popped up on The World’s Best Ever mixtape curated by We Love You So (the official mixtape of “Where the Wild Things Are.”) Capy’s been on tour since mid-August after a great send-off at the Backyard… I’m feeling a welcome-back show in the near future.
#14 Hi-Hat!
Tucked away on State Line is this adorable little coffee shop that looks like something out of a fairy tale. Little Red Riding Hood goes skipping through the Enchanted Forest, takes a wrong turn at the bridge guarded by a fearsome troll, and in an astonishing twist of fate winds up at Hi-Hat to be greeted by the impossibly friendly baristas and a delicious cup of coffee.
#13 Three-day forecast
Just sayin’.
Enlightening, artful worship that doesn’t travel—Mike Crawford doesn’t take his Secret Siblings on the road, so to hear the songs that worship leader magazine named as “one to watch,” you’ll have to come to KC
#11 We got some pretty little women here
At least, Fats thought so.
Local produce, seasonal menu, great vegetarian options, super-cozy atmosphere… I don’t know what else I’d want from a restaurant. The AK and I had my birthday dinner here, and it was extra yummy, but my favorite meal at bluebird bistro is weekend brunch. In my perfect world we’d have a standing Saturday date for that corner booth in the back, pear french toast, yogurt trio. Amen.

#9 …And the Parking is Easy
When I was a nanny in Chicago, I worked for a family who would routinely have me take the Lexus to run errands. This made me break out in hives because 1) Chicago traffic 2) a Lexus? are you kidding me? 3) Parking. Have you ever tried parallel parking a borrowed Lexus SUV in a too-small spot in the middle of the weekday day on Halsted? That’s assuming there would even be an available spot (there won’t be, so don’t bother).
I learned how to leave the car in illegal parking zones with the flashers on, and then I’d proceed to have a heart attack throughout the errand. It was the most stressful thing about my summer (the rest of the job was absolutely lovely).
Moving to Kansas City was like breathing a sigh of relief, parking-wise. I had to park on the street for the first two years that I lived here, and I never, ever complained because 1) Kansas City-ans believe you should leave 3-5 feet between bumpers (God bless them) and 2) There’s always parking, period.
No matter where you go. Westport: always parking. The Plaza: always parking. The heart of downtown on a busy Thursday evening during an event at Sprint Center: always parking. It’s not always free, and it’s not always immediate (I’ve done the circle-the-block a few times) but it’s always available.
